Theresa Fuqua is in her sixth season as women's cross country head coach and women's track and field assistant coach. A record-setting distance runner at Houston, Fuqua, then Theresa Dunn, was a four-time All-American in the middle events, two-time cross country MVP and two-time track and field MVP. She holds current UH records in the indoor mile, and the outdoor 800 and 1500 meters. In 1988, Fuqua qualified for the Olympic Trials in the 800 and 1,500-meter events. In 1997, Fuqua coached third-team all-Conference USA indoor runner and outdoor 800-meter runner-up Cilla Pettersson. In 1998, Fuqua trained the Conference USA Indoor and Outdoor C-USA champion and NCAA qualifier, Vernetta Rolle, and Houston's distance medley relay team finished third at the C-USA Indoor meet. In 1999, Fuqua coached All-Conference USA cross country runner Jackie Rzepecki. At the C-USA Indoor Championships Pettersson finished second in the 800 meters and fourth in the mile, while Dawn Charlier finished fifth in the mile and 3,000 meters. In addition, Houston won the distance medley relay race. At the outdoor meet Charlier was third in the 1,500 meters and sixth in the 3,000 meters. In 2000, she coached Dawn Charlier, who won the mile run at the Conference USA Indoor Championships. At the C-USA Outdoor meet, three of her runners finished among the three runners in four different races. Charlier finished second in the 800 meters and mile run, while Jackie Rzepecki was third in the 5,000-meter run and Stacy Poole was third in the 10,000 meters. In 2001, Rzepecki finished second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and fifth in the 5,000 meters. Last fall, Fuqua guided the UH women's cross country team to a fourth-place finish at the C-USA Cross Country Championships and a seventh-place finish at the NCAA South Central Regional Championships. Fuqua received a bachelor of science degree in nutrition and foods from UH in 1989. That same year, she was named the head coach of boy's and girl's cross country and girl's track at Episcopal High School in Houston. Under Fuqua's direction Episcopal High won two straight state championships in girl's track in 1992 and 1993. Fuqua and her husband, Jerry, have a son, Miles.
